deny being drunk on the night of May 8th. The facts are as fol- -lows:- For some time past 1 have suffered from Insomnia since about May 4th. this has been aggravated by a painful witflow of my left thumb which was lanced twice. On the evening in ques- -tion I went to bed about 10.30, as Mr. Chapman can prove, but was unable to sleep. I therefore got up to read hoping thereby to induce sleep. Finding it impossible to sleep and knowing that my duties in the Hospital required me to be fresh in the morning, I, objecting to morphia which 1 hed at my command, took 3 ounces of a Bromide draught forgetting at the time it contained Hyoscene which even in small doses is a poison and acts as a drug making the subject of it look as if he were intoxicated. I append a statement from Mr. Brown, Government Analyst, on this subject and 1 desire that he may be allowed to come up and give evidence for me.

From previous experiences an ordinary

dose of Mist Sedative proved ineffectual on my patients hence my contempt for the Mixture when taking a triple dose for my- -self, which contained 1/66.6 of a grain of Hyoscene.
